Waterford Selectmen on March 25, 2019 approved an “Ordinance Restricting Vehicle Weight on Posted Ways,” which is designed to protect town roads during mud season.
While Waterford has been posting roads each spring for decades, selectmen only recently learned that they couldn’t legally enforce postings without a local ordinance. The road limit is 23,000 pounds.
As designed by Maine Municipal Association, the ordinance follows the new philosophy that once roads are posted, they remain closed to heavy traffic until the postings are lifted. The ordinance allows for a written permit submitted to the road commissioner. Road postings went up March 25, 2019.
